Celebrating Innovation and Education: Highlights from Ukraine’s STEAM Festival

As International Science Day came around, Ivano-Frankivsk hosted the VI All-Ukrainian Festival of Educational Innovations “Steam-Human for Peace: the Power of Mind and Goodness for Humanity” at the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater. Organized by the Ivano-Frankivsk City Council’s Center for Educational Innovations, the two-day event aims to advance STEAM education, promote innovative technologies, and support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The festival serves as a platform for communication, exchange of STEAM educational experiences, and support for student-driven creative and scientific projects, all while fostering peace, security, and goodwill.

However, media coverage of this event varies significantly, reflecting the distinct priorities and audiences of the reporting outlets. Analyzing the reports from Vezha TV and Radio Company and the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas (IFNTUOG) reveals contrasting narratives and focuses.

Vezha TV and Radio Company

Vezha TV’s report adopts a traditional television news format, using dramatic introductions and visually stimulating content to engage a general audience. The broadcast begins with the inspiring phrase “The power of mind and goodness for humanity,” setting an emotional and motivational tone. The coverage highlights eye-catching elements, such as a “fruit piano” and AI visual recognition technology.

The report mentions “over seven dozen teams” participating from various regions and countries, emphasizing broad participation without delving into specific details. This approach aligns with Vezha TV’s aim to create a sensational and engaging story rather than a detailed educational analysis. The selective focus on individual projects and interviews, like Matviy Havrylyuk showcasing his “fruit piano,” adds a personal and emotional dimension to the report. This style caters to Vezha’s audience, who prefer visually appealing and emotionally charged content over comprehensive insight into the event’s educational significance.

Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas (IFNTUOG)

In contrast, IFNTUOG’s coverage is tailored for an academic audience, providing detailed text and numerous photos on their website. The report specifies that the festival featured “over 100 interesting, diverse activities, over 1000 talented students and teachers, 75 teams from all over Ukraine and the world,” establishing the event’s scale and impact. This precise information appeals to those interested in educational metrics and outcomes.

The university’s report emphasizes the festival’s alignment with global educational goals, noting its contribution to the “Global Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN.” This reference underscores the broader educational significance of the festival. Furthermore, IFNTUOG’s report includes detailed descriptions of academic figures’ involvement, such as Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work Serhiy Zikratyy, who praised the festival’s role in fostering technological advancement among students.

Additionally, IFNTUOG highlights the presence of their own representatives, Principal of the Institute of Engineering Mechanics and Robotics, prof. Lesya Shkitsa and Principal of the Center for Innovative Development IFNTUNG, Assoc. Volodymyr Kornuta, Department of Software Engineering, Institute of Information Technologies. Their active participation and contributions add a layer of institutional pride, emphasizing the festival’s importance. The use of formal language, specific data, and references to global educational standards aligns with IFNTUOG’s aim to cater to an academic audience.

Conclusion

The key difference between the two reports lies in their focus and intended audience. Vezha TV’s coverage emphasizes engaging, visually appealing content designed to captivate a general audience, with selective focus on captivating projects and emotional interviews. In contrast, IFNTUOG provides a detailed, academically-oriented narrative that highlights the festival’s significance within the context of STEAM education and innovation. This report aims to showcase the festival’s educational importance and the university’s role in promoting technological and scientific advancement.
