Billions on school digitalization. Was it worth it?

A year ago, UNESCO published an article highlighting China’s Smart Education of China (SEC) initiative. Launched in 2020, SEC is a comprehensive digital platform that offers a vast array of resources for basic, vocational, and higher education, including curriculum-aligned materials and MOOCs. It has played a crucial role in facilitating large-scale distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting over 13.15 million users. The platform also offers digital competency training for teachers and students, aiming to bridge the educational gap between urban and rural areas and enhance educational equity and quality across China.

According to Chinese media, SEC has been a significant success. The platform’s courses have garnered millions of views from students and provide a multitude of services and resources, such as educational resources integration, evaluation and feedback mechanisms, promotion of educational equity, personalized learning, smart homework, home-school collaboration, and innovative after-school services. Additionally, SEC offers excellent opportunities for teacher development, such as smart lesson preparation, enabling educators to enhance their teaching strategies and deliver more effective lessons.

However, some issues persist. For instance, some teachers are not yet familiar with the platform’s functions and need to improve their proficiency in using it. This challenge highlights the need for ongoing training and support to ensure that educators can fully leverage the platform’s capabilities. Another concern is the instability of the network environment, which affects the user experience on the platform. Frequent disruptions can hinder the learning process, making it imperative to improve network reliability and infrastructure. Lastly, the compatibility of the platform’s resources with local teaching needs requires optimization. To maximize the platform’s impact, its content must be tailored to meet the specific educational requirements of different regions.

SEC has begun addressing some of these challenges. In regard to local resources, SEC has created bundles for over 15 cities across China, leveraging tailored resources for each region. Teachers also benefit from training sessions and educational articles published by The China Education Information Website. While the instability of the network is not directly within SEC’s control, it could be mitigated through tighter collaboration with other ministries and network providers.

It is important to note that one of the essential functions of the SEC platform is to gather information about its users. As a prospect, this data can be used to address individualized needs, allowing developers to gain comprehensive knowledge to build further products for the platform. Moreover, with the rise of AI, it is possible to train language models to provide personalized feedback on the materials, enhancing the learning experience. By leveraging user data and AI, SEC can continually evolve and adapt to meet the diverse needs of its users, driving innovation in education and ensuring that all students have access to high-quality learning opportunities.
